LED Lighting: 10 Things to Know
Diodes, or LEDs, are becoming increasingly popular and highest quality lighting products are manufactured LEDs and sold. LED lighting is an alternative to incandescent or fluorescent interest in residential and commercial lighting, they are very energy efficient, have a long life, are very small, no time to return to strike can be variable, produce relatively low heat, have a low failure rate, are resistant to impact, work well at low temperatures, their light can be performed easily and contain toxic mercury is not unlike today's energy efficient lighting products popular compact fluorescent bulb (CFL). Here there are 10 things you need to know about this new source of light emerging.
1. LED and white LED can be red, green, blue or amber. The color emitted by an LED depends on the materials used in their production. For example, a red light is made of chemical elements aluminum, gallium and arsenic. The LEDs are created by a blue LED covered with a yellow layer and phosphorus. A white LED can also be created using LED red, blue and green in close proximity to each other. At that time there was an LED that can emit white light. Producing a LED that can emit white light is the "Holy Grail" of LED lighting research.
2. Brightness LED High-power LEDs can only produce about 80 lumens of light. In comparison, a normal light bulb produces 60 watts incandescent about 900 lumens. Therefore, a single high power LED is only 1/11th as bright as a 60-watt incandescent bulb. To produce an illumination appropriate, therefore, has an LED light contain groups of LEDs. However, the future is bright, a pun for the LED. The LED light output has nearly doubled in the past two years.
3. LED Color temperature Color temperature is a measure of the color appearance of a light source that allows to describe the apparent "heat" (red) or cool (blue) light. Light sources below 3200 degrees Kelvin (3200K) are considered "Hot", while above 4000K are considered cold light sources. In comparison, a traditional incandescent light bulb for the home is 2800K. The color temperature of light source is not related with how the light bulb gets hot, or how much heat is generated by light. White LEDs to vary the color temperature. Some white LEDs can be so "hot" in appearance than 2600K, but most white LEDs are a bit "cool" in appearance. That's because most white LEDs are created by placing phosphorus yellow blue LED.
4. LED color rendering performance index (CRI) is the ability of any light source to represent colors accurately. The CRI scale ranges from 1 (low pressure sodium) to 100 (the sun). A CRI of 75 is considered good, a score of 85 is considered very good, a score 95 is considered excellent, and, of course, a CRI of 100 is considered perfect. LEDs in warm white color temperature are currently available with a CRI of 80.
5. As all effective LED light sources, the efficiency of LEDs is measured in lumens / Watt, the amount of light produced by a power unit. Heat LED White produce between 25-44 lumens per watt, while the fresh white LEDs are more efficient in the production of 47-64 lumens per watt. For comparison, the typical incandescent bulb home creates 10-18 lumens / watt, while compact fluorescent bulbs 35-60 lumens / Watt.
6. LED Drivers fluorescent bulbs require a ballast to operate. The ballast provides a starting voltage and limits the power of the bulb. LEDs also require a similar electronic power supply. For LEDs, this source of energy E is usually called an LED driver. The LED driver converts line current appropriate voltage (typically between two and four volts DC for High Brightness LED) and current (generally 200-1000 or milliamps mA), and may also include dimming and / or color correction control. LED drivers are typically about 85% effective. Therefore, the efficiency of LEDs is reduced by 15% for LED driver.
7. LED Heat Generation is a myth that the LEDs do not generate heat. In fact, all light sources produce heat and lights LED are no different. Therefore, it is important that an LED lighting fixture is designed with heat sinks "to dissipate the heat that is created.
8. Lifetime LED lights do not burn like a light bulb. Instead, they grow progressively regulator on their lives until they no longer emit light enough to be useful. An LED is usually considered not to be more useful when it emits only 70% of the initial amount of LED light products. The time it takes often called as "nominal life" of an LED. While some lights may have a lifespan of 100,000 hours, usually only in perfect laboratory conditions. Under the conditions real world through the status lights to light devices can last up to 60,000 hours. The lifetime of an LED face is often much less when the LED becomes a Fixture, LED compared to farm out an artifact due to the accumulation of heat inside the engine. The typical interior LED lamp may have a typical life rating of 35,000 to 60,000 hours.
9. OLED An OLED is an organic light emitting diode. It is also an LED contains carbon. OLEDs are generally made of lightweight flexible sheets. Today, OLEDs operate at substantially lower efficiency inorganic (crystalline) LEDs. OLEDs tend to generate less light per unit area than inorganic solid-state LED which are generally designed to be used as point sources of light.
10. IR and UV LEDs do not emit infrared heat, radiation, such as an incandescent bulb. In addition, white LEDs do not create radiation light ultraviolet (UV) fluorescent bulb.
Although there were a lot of media attention to LED, there are still too light that are not well designed. In short, the LED lighting market continues to grow. Research is ongoing to improve the brightness of the LED efficiency, and lifetime of LEDs at a remarkable pace. However, in the short term, be careful when choosing a LED fixture.
