Three Steps to Picking the Right Bathroom Faucet

Picking out the right bathroom faucet can be a bit overwhelming if you aren’t a plumber, so here are three steps to picking out the best bathroom faucet for your needs.

Your first step is selecting an installation style.  A bathroom faucet comes in four different styles:  centerset, single-hole, wall-mounted, and widespread.

A centerset bathroom faucet is probably what you are most familiar with.  It utilizes three holes in the countertop measuring typically 4 inches from hole to hole. The water spigot and handles are usually all connected in one base, but it is possible to find the centerset  with the handles separate.

A single-hole faucet, obviously uses a single hole and a single handle.

A wall-mounted bathroom faucet is an excellent choice if you have chosen a wall-mounted sink, a vessel sink or an undercounter sink without holes drilled.  These faucets mount on the wall above the sink reaching over the edge of the sink, height of the mount is optional.  This feature makes this bathroom faucet a terrific choice if you are being conscious of the special needs person for handicap accessibility.

A widespread faucet is simply a faucet utilizing three hole drillings, but spaced 8 to 16 inches apart.  They can also be mounted on the counter behind the sink with no holes drilled.

One note on choosing a wall-mounted or widespread bathroom faucet, allow for adequate height placement so you can have room to wash your hands under the faucet.

Your next consideration in picking out your new bathroom faucet should be how many handles.  A bathroom faucet can have one or two handles.  Think of who is going to be using the faucet when considering handles.  If you have a special needs person, elderly or small children, then a two handle faucet would be the better choice.  

Lever handles verses traditional knobs are easier for small children, elderly and special needs people to use independently.  Check for the label of ADA-compliant(Americans with Disablities Act) if you are looking for a bathroom faucet for special needs.

The last consideration in choosing the perfect bathroom faucet for your bathroom remodel should be finish.  This is the icing on the cake for your bathroom remodel.  Think about how the finish on your new bathroom faucet will look against your sink color and backsplash.  The first thing someone will notice when they walk into your bathroom is not what the bottom of the sink looks like, but the bathroom faucet and handles!

Finishes come in a wide range of choices today.  Your options include polished chrome, brushed chrome, brushed nickel, gold or bronze.  One thing to remember when choosing the finish is how easy it is to keep looking new.  Does it wipe clean easily or show water spots easily?
